  • Delivering Business Intelligence with Microsoft SQL Server(TM) 2/E 2008

      BI, SSAS, SSIS, SSRS, Book

    Publisher: McGraw-Hill

    Format: Kindle

In preparation for the MCTS BI exam, I have decided amongst other things to read this book. BI is my weakest area as I have always focused on the dev/dba aspects of SQL server so I was really looking forward to getting through this book.

I purchased the Kindle version to read primarily on my iPad or PC and set about getting through the first few chapters. The book itself was very easy to read and flowed nicely and I must admit, I really liked the example "learn by doing" exercises which …

  • Pro SQL Server 2005 Service Broker

      Service Broker, Book

    Publisher: Apress

    Format: Paperback

I heard some great things about service broker and it seemed ideal to some development projects that I was getting involved with. This book seemed to fit the bill perfectly to help me take what little knowledge I had about service broker to the next level and it didn't disappoint.

The first few chapters were great and are a must read for any developer getting into service broker. It goes through the basics of setting up service broker and goes into detail about how the messaging works. My …

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Implementation And Maintenance (Exam 70-432)

      DBA, Certification, Book

    Publisher: Microsoft Press

    Format: Hardback

I find it hard to review Microsoft Press books as they are nearly always the same. At least you can't fault them for consistency!

So, again, another typical exam book that gives you a broad brush across all of the objective areas with the odd error/typo thrown in for good measure. It is good if you are starting off and want to learn a number of new things fast, but you are often reaching for BOL to get that extra bit of information that the book seems to miss out on.

    Average book that covers …

  • SQL Server Secret Diary

      Book, Productivity

    Publisher: Createspace

    Format: Kindle

Oh dear oh dear. The saying "If something is too good to be true, then invariably it is" comes to mind after reading a few pages of this book.

When I found the book on Amazon for a couple of quid, I thought wow, this looks like a bit of a find and immediately purchased a copy. However, after reading a few pages I knew straight away why it was only on for a couple of quid.

Firstly the formatting of the book on the kindle version was awful. It is clear that the original book was just "save as …

  • SQL Server 2008 Administration: Real-World Skills for MCITP Certification and Beyond

      DBA, Certification, Book

    Publisher: Sybex

    Format: Kindle

I purchased this book to help me through my MCITP but I wasn't entirely happy with it. This book appeals to you as it claims to cover both required exams of the MCITP DBA certification and that was the main selling point to me. However, it does skim through quite a number of areas very quickly, leaving you to go elsewhere to learn that aspect of the technology. There were also a small number of errors in the book, but on the whole it is a good read for what it is.

If you are planning on taking …
